Fire Safety Month

October is making its entrance in St. Croix County, WI. This year looks a little different, but a certain part of the month is always important. October is National Fire Safety Month, and Fire Prevention Week is October 4th through the 10th. This is the time when kids learn how to protect themselves and others from fire, what to do if they see one, and families are reminded to have those important fire safety conversations at home.

Check your tools. October is an excellent month to go through the house and check your fire and carbon monoxide alarms and fire extinguishers. The batteries in your alarms should be replaced every 6 months to ensure they’re always in proper working order. The best practice is to have an alarm in each bedroom, the hallway leading to bedrooms, and one on each floor (for example the living room on the main floor and the basement). Having the alarms positioned correctly will ensure that you know about the fire as soon as possible, allowing people to get out quickly.

There should be a fire extinguisher in the kitchen, garage, and on each floor of the home. Each fire extinguisher should be checked every year to ensure it’s properly pressurized and has not expired. If it has expired or lacks proper pressure, it should be promptly discarded and a new one obtained. It’s important that those living in the home know where the fire extinguishers are located and how to use them. Using an extinguisher incorrectly can result in more damage or injuries from the fire.

Have a plan. Everyone in the home should know how to get out and where to meet if a fire ever happens. Talk to everyone living in the home and even do practice drills to ensure everyone knows the plan. When a fire happens people can panic, and sometimes it’s hard to think clearly. By talking about the plan, having it posted, and even practicing the plan, everyone will know exactly what to do so everyone can get out safely.
