October Is Fire Safety Month in St. Croix County, WI!

October is Fire Safety Month, with the week of the 6th through the 12th being Fire Prevention Week, and October 9th as Fire Prevention Day. We have days, weeks, and months dedicated to learning about fire prevention, but why?

In St. Croix County, WI there have been countless accidents and deaths from fires. The numbers, however, have dropped since the introduction of Fire Prevention Week in 1922. Eventually this week of education was expanded to the whole month of October to ensure more families received crucial fire prevention information. Fire Safety Month was started in commemoration of the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, the main goal being to prevent such a tragedy in the future.

· What do you learn during Fire Safety Month? During the month of October, school children around the nation learn how to respond if a fire were to ever break out in their home. They learn to stop, drop, and roll if their clothing catches on fire. They also learn that their family should have a plan in the event of a fire. Do you have a plan? If you must leave your house in the middle of the night, does everyone know where to go so you can ensure everyone is safe? Do you or your kids know how to use lifesaving tools like fire ladders and fire extinguishers? All of these are important questions, and October is the perfect time to review this information with the whole family.

· What else can you do during Fire Safety Month to make sure your family is safe? Every home in St. Croix County should have a fire alarm in every bedroom and hallway, and one in at least one main room on every floor. The batteries in your fire alarms should be checked and/or changed at least twice a year, and October is a great month to get that done. There should be a fire extinguisher on every floor along with one in the kitchen and garage. Having a fire extinguisher handy can be the difference between minor fire damage or the loss of the whole house.

· You’ve followed all the tips of Fire Safety Month, but still have fire damage. Sometimes, even with the best preventative measures, fire damage still happens. What do you do? The technicians at ServiceMaster Restoration and Cleaning are here to help the residents of St. Croix County with all their fire damage restoration needs.
